CHEST DRAIN INSERTION MODEL
Royal College of Surgeons of England, UK
This model was designed to assess surgical students during the insertion of a right sided chest drain. The brief was to design a reusable plastic torso suitable for repeat manufacture with recessed area for a single-use and replaceable skin pad made from soft silicone containing the epidermis, dermis, fat and muscle layers. The usual anatomical landmarks for inserting a chest drain were required including intercostal spaces wide enough to allow for easy finger insertion between the palpable ribs below the skin’s surface and a clear internal space for drain insertion.
